What should we explain next?

Ask about anything you've never quite understood. Vote on other people's questions. We turn the most popular ones into short videos that anyone can watch for free.

Free, and you don't need an account. Every idea is checked before it goes public.

Ideas people want explained

Vote for the ones you'd actually watch. Anything that reaches 500 votes gets made.

How it works

Three steps. You do the first two.

1. Ask

Type your question and a line about why you want to know. Use your name or stay anonymous.

2. People vote

Once it passes our checks it joins the list, and anyone can vote for it. Similar questions get merged together.

3. We make it

The most-wanted ideas become short videos, free to watch and free to embed on your own site. Whoever asked gets the credit.

Checking and ranking happen automatically, but a real person reviews every winning idea before we make anything.

What can I ask about?

Almost anything, as long as it works for a general audience. We're not a kids' channel, but we keep it suitable for one to watch alongside you.

✓Go ahead

  • Money, bills, tax and contracts
  • How everyday things actually work
  • Science, nature and health in general
  • History, and why it still matters
  • Business, jobs and how companies make money
  • Anything you've been nodding along to for years

×Not these

  • Anything explicit, graphic or violent
  • Hate, harassment or targeting people
  • Instructions for anything dangerous or illegal
  • Personal details about you or anyone else
  • "What should I do about my..." health, legal or money situation
  • Adverts dressed up as questions
We explain how things work, never what you personally should do.

Submission rules

What we'll explain

Any question with a real, checkable answer, suitable for a general audience. Add a line saying why you want to know — it helps other people decide whether to vote for it.

What gets rejected

Every submission is screened automatically before it appears in public. We turn down anything that involves:

What "family-friendly" means here

We're a general-audience channel, not a children's one. It means a question you'd be happy to hear answered out loud at home, not that we only cover things aimed at kids. Mortgages, tax, war, and how a business really makes its money are all fine. Explicit and graphic material isn't.

A person has the final say

Screening and ranking are automatic. Deciding what gets made is not. Once an idea passes 500 votes, someone reviews it before production and can still turn it down.

Credit

Every finished video credits whoever asked for it, on the page and at the end of the video. Pick "anonymous" instead if you'd rather, and you can change your mind later either way.

Your idea becomes publicOnce it passes screening it appears on the site and can be found by search engines. Don't include anything you'd mind a stranger reading.
Permission you give usBy submitting, you let us use, adapt and publish your idea and any video we make from it, for free and without a time limit. You keep any rights you already had.
What you get backEvery finished video is free to embed anywhere, including on commercial sites, as long as you credit Explainr and embed the player from our channel rather than uploading your own copy of the file. Keeping the views on the original is what pays for the next video.
Votes aren't a promisePassing 500 votes makes an idea eligible, not scheduled. We can decline anything.
Not professional adviceOur videos are general information, not legal, medical, financial or tax advice. Talk to someone qualified about your own situation.
MistakesIf we get something wrong we publish a correction and leave the original up, so the record is clear.
AgeYou need to be 13 or older to submit or vote, or 16 where local law requires it.
